Customizing my Macdonalds Iniative Order: Making a Crunchy Combat System Taste Good.

In advance I would like to apologize for that title. This blog is about my proposed combat system I have made for my OSE home game, and the reasoning behind it. It is unfortunately not about ordering at McDonalds. Over the last few months I have been running a OSE game with my long time party of players who I have played with for nearly a decade now. We all enjoy rules tinkering and making little systems for ourselves or attaching new systems in place of ones we don't like. Customizing the details has become a popular end of session discussion before breaking up for the evening. One of the current main focuses for our homebrew has been the combat rules. We generally all like quick snappy combat, but combat that boils down to rolling dice at each other until one side retreats has never been particularly fun. OSR games do center more around the actions leading up to the first initiative than the combat procedure itself. We wanted to add more interesting options while keeping the game...

Solo Roleplaying and Hidden Oracles

Image
I have no time anymore to play with friends. Its unfortunate but since I am a chronic early riser I end up waking up when my old crew of players are going to bed. Staying up to run my games isn't manageable anymore. This has what has recently been pulling me to solo-roleplaying.      I am aware that there are already fantastic solo role playing games like Ironsworn which provide a whole package with system included, however recently I have been into system tinkering and have been looking to make my own game for use at my tables. So rather than using a already existing system that would work perfectly fine I want to make my own system for a solo-campaign. I expect that there will be a few blogs in this series as I develop and play my first game. I will invent as I go.      First thing on the agenda for me is arguably the most important for the game, the oracle. When I ask questions as the player, I need something to give me information ab...

Rambles: Milestones and Leveling Sucks.

Disclaimer: In this blog I do talk about milestones as they are typically used in the modern culture of play from 5e's context. The rule for milestones in the 5e DMG are different and brings up some interesting ideas, but this already got a bit long as a blog so maybe ill discuss this in the future! In this blog, when I'm talking about milestones Im talking about session based or story-based full level ups without XP. I am also discussing this entirely within my own play experience so this might not be the case for you.      During my time running games I can't really think of a time I did not use milestones. Recently I started thinking about them again critically because I am designing my own game system to run my dream game, while also trying to be in line with the play culture from 5e for new player appeal. I was working on a write up of my dream system for advancement and when I got to the idea of milestones and realized that I didn't know if I even liked...
